NYC Humane Education P-Course: Promoting Success in Science and Literacy through Humane Education
Join HEART for a self-paced 36-hour After School Professional Development (ASPDP) online P-course for grades K – 5 teachers in the Spring 2015 semester, titled, Promoting Success in Science and Literacy Through Humane Education, Course Code: P27-180S15. Participation in the course qualifies towards a salary differential. Participants will explore ways to utilize humane education content to implement strategies that support the development of science and literacy skills. Humane education informs students about issues related to human rights, animal protection, and environmental ethics through critical thinking, fostering reverence, and developing problem solving skills. Humane Resource Guide Now Available for Download
HEART’s Humane Resource Guide, made in collaboration with the ASPCA and IFAW, is now available to download. This guide contains lessons and activities on animal issues for students in grades K – 12 that can be conducted both in school settings as well as more nontraditional out-of-school venues. The YMCA William Floyd Project is hosting a free six-session humane education program in Mastic, NY. The program is geared for ages 9-12 years old, but older teens and families are welcome to participate. Click here for details.
HEART Releases New Educational Videos on Puppy Mills and Shelter Animals
HEART is thrilled to announce that we have started developing a series of new educational videos. For grades 1 – 3, we now offer an introduction to animal shelters and what kids can do to help. For older students (grades 5 and up), we created a video on puppy mills. These resources will be provided to teachers to assist them in teaching kids about companion animal issues and are available online for use by a wider audience. See the videos on our youtube channel.

After-School Program at the Boys and Girls Club of Oyster Bay

Humane Education Workshops in NYC and Long Island
This February HEART will be conducting two humane education workshops (no charge) in Long Island and Manhattan to train activists, educators and any concerned citizens to teach our 4-lesson program on animal welfare and environmental protection issues to local 4th and 5th grade students.

Stockton Elementary Travel to Springfield to Speak Up for Animals
On March 26th, 2012 twenty-three 8th grade students in the HEART program at Stockton Elementary School in Chicago took a four hour bus ride to Springfield Illinois to talk to their representatives about issues affecting animals in the state. Check out our new video that shows their journey.
HEART’s Caring Kids Program in the NY Daily News
We’re proud to say that HEART’s Caring Kids after-school program at Animal Haven was in the NY Daily News today! The kids learned about animal testing and met a rescued beagle named Juno. Check out the full article.
HEART Students Speak Out Against Gang Violence
Under HEART’s direction, 8th grade students at Westcott Elementary School in Chicago share their experiences with gang violence and how they’re speaking out to help make their community a safer place. Check out the video! And a big thank you to our volunteer Chuck Stepner for all his hard work.
HEART Celebrates National Youth Service Day
HEART, Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City, Bruised Not Broken and the ASPCA are teaming up to celebrate National Youth Service Day. Bigs and Littles will learn about important issues that affect animals, interact with an adorable, rescued, special needs pit bull who is a therapy dog, make toys for shelter animals, and have a Q&A with a Humane Law Enforcement Agent from the ASPCA. Teaching for the 21st Century: Bringing Humane Education into the Classroom

In this day-long workshop, offered through a collaboration between the Institute for Humane Education and HEART (Humane Education Advocates Reaching Teachers), educators will have the opportunity to explore the pressing issues of our time and assess the role of schooling to address them. Teachers will learn how to bring global ethical issues into the classroom through innovative activities and approaches that enable their students to become conscientious choicemakers and engaged changemakers for a more humane, peaceable, and healthy world.
